How it Works

Firearm Transactions and Storage Guidelines

Documentation

  • The seller or dealer must provide the SAPS 271 document to the buyer.

Private Firearm Sales

  • Private sellers are required to hand in the firearm at their nearest registered firearm dealer.
  • The buyer must then contact the dealer to:
    1. Confirm the correct firearm has been delivered.
    2. Provide their personal and contact details as the new buyer.

Storage Options for the Buyer

The buyer has the following options regarding firearm storage:

  • Option 1: Leave the firearm at the current dealership for safekeeping.
  • Option 2: Arrange for the firearm to be transferred to a dealer of their choice.

Note: All storage fees and courier/transfer costs are the responsibility of the buyer.

Recommendations for Private Sellers

  • It is strongly recommended that private sellers hand over sold firearms to a registered firearm dealer for secure storage.

Self-Storage Arrangements

  • Self-storage with the seller is acceptable if the buyer agrees to this arrangement.
  • Self-storage with the buyer is also permitted, but:
    • Must be mutually agreed upon by both parties.
    • This arrangement is not overseen or controlled by us.
